If we compare that to an average human lifespan – middle-aged at forty, aged at sixty, venerable at eighty – then a goblin’s lifespan seems to be about half (or slightly less) than that of a human’s lifespan. But the Fifth Edition core rulebook, while still leaving some vague wiggle room, offers the following: middle-aged at twenty, aged at thirty,

There are conflicting entries in different D&D sourcebooks (to say nothing of cynical cracks from the playerbase that a Goblin’s average lifespan is “about three combat rounds.”) Some have goblins being adult at three and dead at twenty, others say they reach adulthood at 12 and live for 60 years, yet others say they have “standard humanoid” lifespans. Most of the sources on goblins address them as opponents, not PCs.

What is adult, for a goblin? When are they physically mature? This question gets a lot vaguer.

Her age as pegged as anywhere between six and nine years old, but there’s one thing she is firm on: she is an adult goblin, she is fully grown, she is of childbearing age. That combined with other factors such as her alcoholism and cynical, hardened outlook can paint a picture of a much older person.Ĭanonically speaking, we don’t have a completely solid age for Nott because Nott herself does not know her clan didn’t track things like birthdays very closely. On the other end of the scale, there’s a portrayal of Nott as being almost a middle-aged matron: she has expressed an explicitly parental relation towards Caleb, a man at least three times her age, and tends to mother the rest of the Mighty Nein as well. Even her teammates are not free from the pitfall of assuming her to be a child. That plus the fact that Nott is a very eccentric person in a lot of other ways (her anxiety, her kleptomania and love for valuable and shiny things) can lead people to underestimate her – a lot. She’s very small, which leads to the unconscious assumption that being a child’s size, she must also have a child’s mind and maturity. People both in-world and out tend to underestimate Nott. We have not been given much information about her, and when it comes to goblins in general the information is often vague and contradictory. Perception of Nott’s age and maturity levels tends to waver across the map for this particular character. The question of goblin age has come up a few times since Nott the Brave, an unusual phenomenon in terms of being a goblin player character, hit the scene.
